Chapter 11
They
In so far as it is accurate to speak of one universe as existing in reality, quantum theory implies that it is necessarily equally accurate to speak of other, different universes as existing in reality too. So other universes exist in exactly the same sense that the single universe that we see exists. This is not a matter of interpretation. It is a logical consequence of quantum theory, albeit one that somehow, seventy years after the theory was discovered, is still in dispute. – David Deutsch
There
are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,
Than are dreamt of in your philosophy- Willaim Shakespeare.
The Doctor waved some sort of electronic wand
all over and around her, and said, “Okay, you’re good,” in almost accent free
English. “Tre Bien” he finished in his
native tongue. He placed the wand in its
holder on the side of the machine to which it was attached.
“Great.”
Marie said, “Now will someone tell me WTF this is all about. I think I’ve been pretty damned patient to be
honest, and I think I deserve an answer.”
The Doctor looked at Barry, placed his hand
on his friend’s shoulder, smiled, and walked out of the room without even
looking at Marie.
“I guess it’s going to be you then”
Barry nodded slowly, a smirk growing over his
face. “It’s hard to explain. And even if I do a great job, you’re not
going to believe me … but, let’s start with the easy part.”
“Fine.”
Barry Allen drew a deep breath and began,
“Well, it’s like I said, you said yes to Question Number Six on the application
questionnaire, meaning that at one time you owned a cat.”
“Okay.”
“Well, that means you almost certainly had
some latent Toxoplasma Gondii infection.”
“I
beg your pardon; I have what kind of infection?”
“Well, you don’t now: the Doc cleaned that
up for you. But, to answer your
question, Toxoplasma Gondii is a brain parasite that is able to utilize any
warm blooded host, but can only reproduce sexually in feline species,
specifically in their digestive tract.
The current estimate is that 60% of North Americans and Europeans are
infected. But, as I said, it’s nothing
to be concerned about. The Doc took care of that.”
“You think I have brain parasites?” She was angry and offended.
“Had.
You had brain parasites. Yeah,
absolutely.”
She shook her head in denial. “That’s bullshit.”
“Nope, it’s not. And it’s not the worst part at all of what
I’m about to tell you, but maybe we should wait until we get back on the road.”
“If you think I’m getting back into a car
with you after this shit, without a proper explanation of what this doctor and
brain parasites bullshit actually means, you’re fucking nuts.” She folded her arms over her chest. Despite herself, she did find that she
trusted this strange man, her self-proclaimed rescuer.
“Toxoplasma Gondii has some pretty unique
properties. It can manipulate behavior
of its host by taking control of the dopamine production in the brain, it also
climbs into your amagdalia — your fear center and adjusts your fears to its
liking.” He paused. “It has shaped civilization on this planet
over the last 8,000 years, give or take.”
Marie narrowed her eyes in disbelief and
shook her head slowly.
“It gets … um … more, um … unbelievable as
we go. You can check this stuff out of
Google or whatever when we’re in the car.
Anyway, the Toxies, let’s just call them Toxies for short, possess
another unique characteristic … they have quantum antennas for
inter-dimensional information transfer … they’re basically a form of
extra-dimensional invasion … probes that relay sensory input to their masters
and allow their masters control of the parasite’s hosts. This world is all but conquered by these things,
and almost no one realizes it. Yeah, let
that sink in a bit. That’s how they spy
on us and try to stop us from doing things they don’t want us doing. Wallace Patel is one of their agents. He was originally one of ours, but they got
to him by way of a pretty girl with toxoplasmosis.”
“Seriously?
You’re trying to sell me this shit?”
Barry face turned stern, “It’s not
shit. It’s the truth. The Doc can administer a lie detector test on
me right now, if it will make you feel any better.”
He seemed sincere. He really did. Marie didn’t know what to think. “So, you’re saying I can look this
Toxoplaswhosis stuff up on the internet?
Even the space alien invasion part?”
“Inter-dimensional Invasion … they’re not
space aliens at all … they’re not from our universe … but, no, not that
part. The other stuff on the parasites
though, yes, it’s thoroughly documented … including the part about changing the
host’s behavior and even changing the very courses of civilizations … definitely
yes … a quick Google search will back me up.”
“WTF are you guys doing at this chateau?”
“We’re just a small group of theoretical
physicists like the retreat website said.
That’s the truth.”
